Following restaurant raids by immigration officials on two Isle of Wight Indian restaurants in Shanklin, four illegal workers from Bangladesh have been detained at Coriander Restaurant and a short distance away, at Jasmine Restaurant, another Bangladeshi was also arrested. The Coriander Restaurant could be fined up to £20k per illegal worker.
No other action was taken against the business as the employer because he was able to provide evidence that the required pre-employment checks had been carried out.
This follows hot on the heels of raids at Byron's burger restaurant in London. A spokes man for the South Central Immigration Enforcement Team stated that they were carrying out regular raids to tackle abuse of the system.
