Career History

A large proportion of employers wish to confirm your employments over a set period of time via references.  The sentence at the top of the page will tell you how far back we need to know about, according to the policy of the employer requesting your screening.  For example, this could be 5 years, so if today’s date was 1st January 2013, we need to know a continuous record of your employment back to 1st January 2008.  In this period we need to know of any employments or self-employments you had, any periods of unemployment (whether this is a sabbatical, actively seeking employment or travelling) or any periods of full time education.  For self-employment, please enter the details in the Self-Employment section.  For unemployment, please go to the Gaps in Employment section.  Please use the Education Details section for full time education.  The Career History section is where you can tell us about your current and previous employments.  The form will tell you if you have left any gaps to help you.

Please note that if you were employed through an employment agency, we will need to know their details rather than the employer you were placed at.  This is only if it was the agency that was paying you, not if the agency found you the job and you were paid by the employer themselves.  If you were paid through your own limited company, please enter these details in the Self-Employment section.

If you try and submit the online form to us with a gap between employments not accounted for, the form will display a red error message at the top of the page giving you the dates of the gap to help you.  Please see the Gaps in Employment section for more details.

  • Dismissed: If your employer terminated your employment, please select.
  • Career change: If you left to pursue a different type of employment, for example you were a teacher and decided to become an engineer, please select this option.
  • Job not as expected: Occasionally the reality of a job turns out to be different to its description.  Please select if this was the case.
  • Long term sickness: Please select if your ill health caused you to have to leave this employment.
  • Pursue further education: If you left the role to enter into full time education, please select this option.

Self-Employment

The Self-Employment section is for you to tell us about any periods in the employment history period requested in the sentence at the top of the page. This includes any periods as a company director or partner, employed by your own limited company or as a sole trader. Please note that we will seek confirmation of these periods either references from your accountant or via official documentation.  SW will contact you to discuss any requirements for documentation should they arise, but if you have any queries please check the Candidate Guidance documentation for further information.  This can be found on the left hand side of the online form as a downloadable PDF document.

Gaps in Employment

We need to know what you were doing between the periods of employment you have entered in the Employment section.  However we don’t expect you to account for every day of your employment screening period, so each employer sets a gap tolerance: the longest period of time that you don’t need to account for.  For example, for a 3 month gap tolerance, you need only tell us about periods of unemployment 4 months or longer.  Gaps of 3 months or less can be left without explanation.  The sentence at the top of the page will tell you the gap tolerance set by your employer.
