DBS Checks for Self-Employed Professionals

A simple, compliant way to apply for Basic, Enhanced or Enhanced with Barred List DBS checks as a self-employed professional

Apply for Your Basic, Enhanced or Enhanced with Barred List DBS Check

Self-employed and need a DBS check for your work?

Updated UK Government guidance now allows self-employed professionals and personal employees to apply for Enhanced and Enhanced with Barred List DBS checks, alongside Basic DBS checks which have always been available to individuals. This means independent professionals can now access the right level of DBS check to demonstrate trust, credibility and safeguarding responsibility when working with children, adults or vulnerable groups.

Matrix Security Watchdog provides a simple, compliant route to help you secure the appropriate DBS check and give your clients confidence.

Looking for an individual Basic DBS Check instead?

Why This Matters for You

If you are a tutor, carer, personal assistant, therapist, coach or other self-employed professional, the right level of DBS check - whether Basic, Enhanced or Enhanced with Barred List - can help you:

  • Build trust and reassurance with clients

  • Demonstrate your commitment to safeguarding

  • Meet expectations in sectors where higher-level checks are required

  • Access more work opportunities, particularly in education, care and personal services

Enhanced checks provide more detailed background information than Basic checks and, where eligible, can include checks of the Children’s and Adults’ Barred Lists.

Who Can Apply

If you are paid for the work you do and your role meets DBS eligibility criteria, you may be able to apply for an Enhanced or Enhanced with Barred List DBS check. This may include:

  • Private tutors and education specialists
  • Nannies and child carers
  • Personal assistants and home support workers
  • Therapists and coaches working independently
  • Freelance fitness instructors and sports coaches
  • Other workers in roles involving children or vulnerable adults

*Not all roles automatically qualify. Eligibility depends on whether your work involves regulated activity or responsibilities that justify an Enhanced check. If you are unsure, check out our FAQs or get in touch with our team for guidance.

If your work does not meet the criteria for an Enhanced check, a Basic DBS check may still be appropriate and can help provide reassurance to your clients.

How It Works

1. Confirm Your Eligibility
We help you understand whether your role is suitable for an Enhanced or Enhanced with Barred List DBS check.

2. Apply Through Matrix Security Watchdog
You cannot apply directly to DBS as an individual for this level of check. Your application is submitted through us as an approved Umbrella Body, with guidance at every stage.

3. Complete Your Digital Identity Check
You will complete a digital identity check through our trusted partner, a Home Office-certified Identity Service Provider.

You must hold the suitable identity documents to complete this step, as digital ID verification is required for all self-employed applications submitted through our service. See the FAQ section below for details of the documents you will need.

4. Receive Your DBS Certificate
Once processed, your certificate is issued to you. You can then share it with clients or organisations who require proof of your enhanced disclosure.
