If you are self-employed or a personal employee and your work involves children, adults or vulnerable groups, you may be eligible to apply for an Enhanced DBS check or Enhanced DBS check with Barred List(s).
This page is for independent professionals who need to apply for an Enhanced level DBS check to meet safeguarding expectations as part of their work.
Before You Apply
To apply for an Enhanced DBS check as a self-employed professional, you must:
✓ Be paid for the work you carry out (this route does not apply to volunteers)
✓ Be applying for a role that meets DBS eligibility for an Enhanced or Enhanced with Barred List check
✓ Complete a digital identity check using approved identity documents
✓ Provide accurate details about the type of work you do

What You Need for a Digital ID Check
You will require a biometric passport to continue. A biometric (or e-passport) contains an electronic chip with your details. You can identify if you have one by the small gold chip symbol on the front cover.
All self-employed applicants must complete a digital identity check through our trusted partner, a Home Office-certified Identity Service Provider. You will need two approved identity documents:
If you are a UK or Irish citizen with a biometric passport:
- Document 1: UK or Irish biometric passport or passport card (can be expired within the last 6 months)
- Document 2: UK, EU or EEA driving licence
If you are a non-UK citizen with a biometric identity document:
- Document 1: A biometric passport that meets ICAO e-passport standards or an EU/EEA biometric national ID card that follows EC 2252/2004
- Document 2: UK, EU or EEA driving licence
Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) cannot be used for this digital ID route.
If you do not hold the required documents, you will not be able to complete your application through this service.
